As sure as the sun rises in the east each day along with the spirit that uniquely lives and breathes in each one of us, a person can paddle their own canoe on their own terms and at the same time feel kinship with, or harbor love for, or even be proud of, a group of people – be it your family, your clan, the community you are raised in/by, or the tribe you were born in. One does not necessarily exclude the other. We can be free spirits and at the same time an integral part of the family or community that raised us. We can be perfectly integrated and committed without being claimed by or holding power over those we share similar paths and origins.

Our spirits, as they rise each day in the east, are unique, one of a kind. When the sun travels from east to west we can, as a People, inspire one another, strengthen one another, teach one another, and nurture one another. But by the end of the day, when our spirits sink in the west, we are all each still unique and simply wonderful the way we are.
